Greek Style Iced Coffee
For an ice cold pick me up
I don’t drink coffee. I know, this is a sacrilege in and of itself, however I’m rather sensitive to caffeine and I’d rather just not bother with the jitters. I do perceive coffee as a social glue of sorts and am happy to order some overly sweet iced something or other at a chain coffee shop while discussing the meaning of life with my friends. I just never drank coffee at home.
Until last year, that is. We went to spend 10 days in Greece on the beautiful island of Milos (I cannot recommend it enough, one of the most beautiful Greek Islands by miles) and the small B&B we were staying at offered Greek Iced Coffee for breakfast. Did i have it every day? Yes. Did I consequently act like the energiser bunny until the late afternoon? Also yes. But oh, how it was worth it. Not overly sweet, light, foamy, a dream with ice and a straw.
On our last day I had to ask for the recipe, and the owner graciously obliged. It uses instant coffee, which I’m confident most coffee snobs would sneer at. It’s also very dreamy and transports me back to those lazy days on the beach. I'd say give it a try and let me know if it does the same for you. If not, I guess the only solution is to book your flight to a Greek Island sooner, rather than later.
The recipe makes a not overly sweet drink. You can, naturally, customise it as you see fit, switch the kind of milk you use, foam it or not, make it your own and let me know the results!
Ingredients (makes one Iced Coffee, is easily doubled )
ice
ice cold water
oat milk (i used vanilla flavoured but really, any milk will do)
1-2 tsp instant coffee (whichever brand you prefer)
1-2 tsp sweetened condensed milk (depending on your preference for sweetness)
Place the instant coffee, condensed milk and a few tablespoons of ice cold water in a tall glass. Using a milk frother (or a teaspoon) blend them together vigorously until the mixture becomes foamy and doubles (triples?) in volume.
Add the ice. If you’re feeling fancy, foam the oat milk as well and pour it carefully over the coffee. If not, just pour your milk directly over the ice. Serve with a straw. Close your eyes and imagine the Mediterranean Sea nearby.
Let me know if you make it and subscribe for more mouthwatering summer recipes!
