Dark Hot Chocolate

This recipe for dark hot chocolate is “Angelina style” - thick, creamy, deeply chocolatey, more of a “grown up” drink but also certainly the best I’ve ever had. Make and gift a jar of this mix so that your loved ones can also enjoy it on cold winter nights.

If you’ve been lucky enough to try hot chocolate in Paris, you know that more often than not you are served a tiny cup with the richest, most delicious and decadent drink, topped with freshly whipped cream. The absolute dream!

I cannot bring Paris to you, but why not try making this delicious concoction to enjoy on chilli fall and winter nights? The mix will keep for up to two months in your pantry and is absolutely perfect for gifting, should you wish to share.

The key to this is to use the best chocolate and cocoa powder you can find. This will elevate the drink from simple “hot cocoa” to what is essentially dessert in liquid form. What’s more, it’s so easy to make the mix (if you don’t have a food processor, just grate the chocolate finely and mix it with the other ingredients) that you’ll be ready to enjoy it in all of 10 minutes!

You can swap out the vanilla extract to personalise your drink: coffee, mint, orange, even chilli would work very well.

Seeing that this dark hot chocolate appeals to adults more anyway, why not finish it off with a teaspoon fo liquor such as whiskey, rum, Bailey’s Irish Cream? The possibilities are endless!

Yield: 2 cups mix, enough for 8 servings of hot chocolate
